1. | John (Constantine) Negroponte was born about 1792 in Constantinople/Istanbul, Turkey (son of Constantine (Zannis) Negroponte and Arghyro [Negroponte]); died after 1842/1860. Notes:
James Constantine Negroponte is listed in the partnership businesses in 1860 that also involved John Stephen Schilizzi [probably John S. (Zannis) Schilizzi Stephanovich], Emmanuel Halduvacchi, Leonidas Vernudacchi, John Vaffiadacclii, Zanni Stef. Schilizzi, Michael Pantaleone Mavrogordato, Ambrosia Michele Cappati, Ipatias Vernudacchi & M. F. Paspatti. The firms involved included Schilizzi & Co., at London, Manchester and Calcutta; Schilizzi & Vaffiadacchi, Leghorn, Z. Stefanovich & Co., Constantinople; A.M. Cappari, Taganrog; and Ypatio Vernudacchi, Rostoff (London Gazette 7 Jun 1861).
18 Jul 1842: John K. Negroponte, 50, unmarried, born Chios, arrived Syros 1825, merchant, swore allegiance to the Greek government at the town hall, Ermoupolis.
J. C. Negreponte, Esq. contributed £1 to a relief drive ("Destructive Fire in St. John's, Newfoundland," The Manchester Guardian 11 Jul 1846, p 1). [This may not be he]
James Constantine Negreponte "a Greek merchant, living in London" was the victorious defendant in a court case -- Munn and others v. Negreponte -- involving agency and the non-payment for goods (The Manchester Guardian 3 Apr 1841, p 3). This, as well as the other citations, could refer to his approximate namesake, Jacob Constantine Negroponte.
1859: J.C. Negroponte worked for Schilizzi & Co. according to the Thacker's Directories, Calcutta.
Negroponte Bros. owned a warehouse at 8 Turner St., Manchester, 1843, 1945.
James Constantine Negroponte owned a house at 3 York St., Cheetham Township, Manchester, 1838-1847. The street no longer exists, although there is a York Street in central Manchester, 2.2 miles away.
