    Notes:

Zolotas says that references to Dimitri Pandelis Agelasto are found in three sources: the Lazaretto Codex of Chios in 1787, archives of Chadzi Lorenzis Schilizzi in 1816, and in Smyrni in 1816. Argenti created two Dimitri (#7, Dimitri Zannis ) and (#10, Dimitri Pandelis), but this was apparently a mistaken reading of Zolotas who referred to Dimitri only as the son of Pandelis, not Zannis. (George Agelasto)

Logically this man may have had a first son named Pandely Dimitri. Indeed, Pandoleon [Pandely] D. Agelasto was among the 327 Chiot refugees in Syros who signed a letter dated 10 Jul 1829 to the Governor of Greece.

    Notes:

Residence: Constantinople bef 1821; possibly Syros 1824-34; Athens aft 1836.

    Occupation: Merchant

According to his obituary, published in the Athens newspaper Alithia (The Truth), 14 February 1867, Stephen D. had made a fortune as a successful merchant in Constantinople in the period before the Greek Revolution of 1821. He settled in Athens in 1837 and gained the reputation of a great philanthropist, contributing to or participating in several welfare institutions. In the last years of his life he was treasurer of the Athens Orphanage.

A graveside monument reads : "For Stephanos D. Agelastos, from Chios, a pious and honest man, a great patriot, a lover of all beautiful things, who passed away on the 2nd of February of the year 1867 at the age of 70, this stone was erected by his relatives as a memorial of their gratitude." To have been a successful merchant before 1821, he would probably have been born no later than 1780. (photo by George Agelasto).

27 Nov 1834: Stephanos Agelasto, 55, married, born Chios [abt 1779], merchant, arriving Syros 1824, swore allegiance to the government at The Orthodox Church of Christ's Transfiguration (Metamorphosis), Syros, (before the town hall was built). Michel Pandely Agelasto, who had arrived on Syros the same year, took the oath the same day. It is likely that this is another Stephanos Agelasto, Michel P.'s third cousin, as this man never married according to probate.

Stephen Agelasto was among the 327 Chiot refugees in Syros who signed a letter dated 10 Jul 1829 to the Governor of Greece.

    Buried:
    Sec 5, n 708

    Died:
The Mayor of Athens issued a hereditary title certificate for Stephanos D. Agelastos. Another document, issued by the same office, claims that his sole heir is the adult son of Eugenios Agelastos.

    George Agelastos comments:

The first certificate must have been issued shortly after Stephen’s death in 1867, the second in 1904. Franca K. died in the same year as Stephen D.; Maria E., whose birth year appears to be 1820, had most probably also died before 1904. So it does make sense that since both heiresses were dead, someone else appeared in 1904, some 40 years after Stephen’s death, and claimed to be the sole heir to Stephen D.

That claim was, of course, sustained by the testimony of two witnesses. But why didn’t that person show up by the time of Stephen’s death? Why, during all those years, didn’t he undertake anything against Franca and Maria being recognized as sole heiresses to Stephen? My conclusion is that this Eugenios Agelastos found (or just paid) two persons to make a false testimony in his favor. In Greece (at least in earlier times, but perhaps it is nowadays still possible), you just need two false witnesses and then you can claim anything. That is my only possible explanation for this confusing story.

Generation: 4

  1. 9.  Michel (Pandia) Agelasto Descendancy chart to this point (4.Pandia3, 2.Michael2, 1.Maria1) was born on 17 Jul 1793 in Chios, Greece; died on 07 Dec 1853 in allées de Meilhan 45, Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur,France; was buried in St. Pierre Cemetery, Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur,France.

    Notes:

The 1840 business directory lists: 47 allées de Meilhan and 45 allées des Capucines (commercial insurance).

Occupation: merchant, insurance broker, accountant. 1820: Zizinia, Petrocochino & Agelasto founded. "It began with Smyrna for cotton, Retimno [Crete] and Hydra for oil. In 1821 it received several products from Livourne and cotton from Alexandria, a little before the dissolution of their company, then the formation of Zizinia & Co. and Petrocochino-Agelasto, two houses that played an important role in Marseille commerce, during and especially after the Greek War of Independence" (Echinard). 1850-52: 47/49A allées des Capucines. After his death the company was known as Agelasto, Michel & Fils (1855-). In 1870, it moved to 1 Rue Beaumont; in 1872, 23 allées des Capucines; in 1884, 9 Rue de la République; in 1895, 2 boulevard du Nord; in 1900, 11 Cours du Chapitre; there in 1907 with phone no. 1.72; in 1915, 137 Rue de Rome; in 1920-33, 15 Rue Gustave-Ricard; in 1950, 5 Cours Honoré d?Estienne d?Orves. The company was run by his sons and eventually his grandson Theodore.

Origin: Chios. He and his business partner, Michel Petrocochino, struggled and finally obtained French naturalization (Echinard). Granted French naturalization, 15 May 1834. File N°6012, Série 9, tome 5 states he arrived in France 1819, was in business as "Petrocochino & Agelasto" and that he first expressed his desire for French citizenship: "…transporté a Marseille, depuis treize ans, son établissement de commerce [connu] sous la raison Petrocochino et Agelasto. En 1822 frappé dans ses affections les plus chères par suite des calamités de sa patrie, le soussigné a depuis longtemps renoncé à y retourner et décide de passer sa vie en France." The petition was initially rejected and Michel was required to renounce allegiance to the King of Greece (provided by Michel Calapodis). French naturalization (see particulars). He is cited in reference to streamlined immigration procedures for the earliest Greek immigrants.

Dictionnaire historique des Rues de Marseille, Edition 2001, in describing Rue Agelasto, 9e arrondissement, Marseille, says Michel Pandia arrived in Marseille in 1819.

Ralli & Agelasto operated in the silk trade in Marseille in 1860-61. See, Gregorii Valerianovich Melgunof, Das südliche Ufer des Kaspischen Meeres oder die Nordprovinzen Persiens (Adamant Media Corporation, 2004), p. 286.

He was a signatory witness to the births of Marigo (Petros) Vlasto and older brother Jean Vlastos.

The 1841 Marseille census for 45 allee de Meilhan lists for the Agelasto household: Piarius [Michel], 48, merchant; Agarith [wife Arghyro], 39; Spar (clerk), 17 [Pandia]; Demetriu, 14; Thermistocle, 10; Theano, 5 [Despina Theano]; Lucise, 2; Bethzi, 1, and two domestic servants. The latter two Agelasto have no registered Marseille births or deaths.

Michel Agelasto, 52, merchant, allees de Meilhan 45, was a signatory witness to the 19 Dec 1848 Marseille marriage of Michel Zygomala and Marie Metaxa.

Michel Agelato [sic], 52, merchant, allees de Meilhan 41, was a signatory witness at the 5 Sep 1846 Marseille Marriage of Jean Demetrius Apalyra & Despinou Scaramanga, along with Michel Petrocochino, George Sechiari and Paul Rodocanachi.

Michel Agelasto is referenced as one of the 1822 massacre refugees who arrived in Marseille (Echinard); This Michel arrived in 1819.

1835, Petrocochino & Agelasto, Marseille operated the Pegasus, 198 tons and the Chariklia, 155 tons. In 1850, handling 13 ships, the firm imported a total of 2,255 tons: from Tarsous 585,066 ocques sesame, 88,000 ocques linseed, 42 bales wool, 183 bales cotton; from Odessa, 4,055 chetwerts wheat; from Berdiansk 6,574 chetwerts wheat, and from Cyprus 201 bales cotton. 1850: 30 rue Sénac. In 1860 it imported 2,165 tons by 10 ships A History of Greek-owned Shipping).

Michel Agelasto was among the twenty-one founding members of the Greek church, Marseille, in 1836, a group which also included Paraschewa Sechiari, Emmanuel Rodocanachi, Andre Argenti, George D. Zizinia, Michel Dromocaiti, Michel Petrocochino [probably Michel Dimitrios Petrocochino, rather than Michel Andre Petrocochino,] George M. Zizinia, Jean Baltazzi, George Petrocochino and George Grimanelli (Echinard 284). Michel Pandeli Agelasto participated in church deliberations in 1875 & 1876 (Calapodis). Through his company Zizinia, Petrocochino, Agelasto, he contributed to the church. In 1830 Michail Agelastos was elected a curator of the Greek Orthodox church on the rue de la grande-Armée, Marseille.

    M. Agelaso, Marseille, is listed among the diaspora Greeks donating 300 fr. to a fund for the Thebes earthquake in 1853.

He took in his sister Zenobie around 1829. According to the charity who was taking care of her sons, Michel: “He himself, like his whole family, was also a victim of Turkish atrocity but managed to flee to Marseille, where he is now living in destitute conditions.” "Madame Sagrandy is living since her arrival in Marseille with her brother Michael Ageletto, a good man, father of a number of children, living himself in very difficult conditions." (footnote p. 33)

The commercial house Zizinia, Petrocochino, Agelasto was founded by the brothers Pandia and Etienne Zizinia, arriving Marseille in 1813/1816, Michel Petrocochino and Michel Agelasto, both arriving Marseille in 1819. Its initial 1823 location was rue Third Calade 31. After the Zizinias' departure, Petrocochino Agelasto located to rue Montgrand 37 bis in 1825. By 1831 it was located at rue Canonge 8. Notes:

Testament: Paul's original testament was drawn up at the notary's office in 1845, with 4 witnesses. A small additional chapter, dated 8 Apr 1855, was signed by Paul himself. A concluding chapter, dated 22 Mar 1856, describes an arrangement between Loula Agelasto and her brothers Eustratios and Lukas, confirmed "after their father's death". This means that Paul died sometime between those two dates, most probably shortly before the last one, i.e. Feb/March 1856.
From the method Paul used in distributing his fortune among his children, it seems that Eustratios was his eldest son and already of full age in 1845. Lukas and Stamati must have been still under age at that time as the sums of money willed to them had to be given to their legal guardians and invested in favor of the two children. We don't know how old Loula, Paul's daughter, was in 1845. The fact that Paul willed to her his whole land ownership indicates that she was not married and that this property was meant as a dowry. But if she was still a child, or a teenager, or a young woman, remains unclear.
The will indicates that Paul had still another daughter, obviously older than Loula and perhaps even older than Eustratios, his first son. He willed a small sum of money "to his daughter Maria, married to John Z[orzis?] Mitarakis." [Argenti has a John Mitarakis married to a Maria (Sinadino), a generation or two later, perhaps this John's grandson.] -- George Agelastos (2014)

According to John (Matthew) Ziffo, his father Matthew Alexander Ziffo "was born in the Island of Chios about 2 1/2 years before the Massacre. On that terrible day his Mother with her two daughters, and a young maid, carrying my Father, took to the mountains to cross the island; following a long trail of refugees and guided by shepherds over mule paths. The maid soon got tired, left the child on the mountain side and fled. A Mr Agelasto, the father of John Agelasto whose firm (Frangopulo Agelasto & Co of London and Liverpool) [Theodore (Matthew) Ziffo] joined when he came to London, was following and recognizing the child picked him up and took him to the island of Syra. By a fortunate coincidence his mother and sisters also landed in Syra. One can imagine her joy at being re-united with her boy whom she had feared lost."

He is the distinguished gentleman whose portrait is omnipresent at the top right of these webpages.

Parker Agelasto has found four copies of a photo taken in Marseille that is believed to be Michael Pandely Agelasto, same as the portrait miniature. There are a lot of similarities to the portrait miniature, but the two pictures are separated by about 20 years. Similarly, one is a real photo the other an artist likeness of the sitter.

He was in partnership as merchants, at Marseilles, under the firm of Petrocochino, Agelasto & Co.; at Constantinople, under the firm of E. M. Vuro and Co.; at Galatz [sic], under the firm of D. C. Climi and Co.; at Ibraila and Bucharest, under the firm of Parembli and Climi; and at London, under the firm of Petrocochino and Co., until it was dissolved 31 Dec 1861. The other partners included George Petrocochino, Michael Vuro, M. Parembli, Anthony Vlasto, J. M. Agelasto, A. D. Syngros and A. N. Damiano (London Gazette 28 Mar 1862). An earlier notice appeared 18 Mar 1862 with the typo M. P. Agelasts.).

Michel Agelasto, 55, merchant, allees des Capucines 15, was a signatory witness to the marriage of Michel Parembli and Aspasia Dromacaiti, 4 Jun 1857.

He was a signatory witness to the 1849 marriage of Antoine Nicholas Petrocochino and Euthalie George Petrocochino.

Michael Agelasto signed a letter to the provisory Greek Parliament in 1825 demanding it include a Chiot deputy. This suggests he lived briefly in Syros after fleeing Chios in 1822 and before settling in Marseille.

27 Nov 1834: Michael Agelasto, 32, married, born Chios, merchant, arriving Syros 1824, swore allegiance to the government at the Syros tribunal (before the town hall was built). Stephen Agelasto [possibly his third cousin Stephanos (Augustis) Agelasto], who arrived on Syros also in 1824, took the oath the same day.

M.P. Agelasto was among the 327 Chiot refugees in Syros who signed a letter dated 10 Jul 1829 to the Governor of Greece.

    M. P. Agelasto was co-administrator of the will [see source] of a parish priest who set up scholarships for young Marseille Chiots in 1861.

P.P. Negroponte and M. Agelesti, both with the firm Negroponte & Agelastl (sic) were among the more than thirty merchants, "citizens of New Orleans and inhabitants of Louisiana," who signed an open letter written under the seal of the City of New Orleans to Dr. John E. E. Ealino in The Charleston Mercury 19 Jan 1860, p 2, praising the physician's skills as his former patients and welcoming him as a winter resident of New Orleans. This man's son, Alexander M., settled in New Orleans after an 1860 visit on which, perhaps, he was accompanied by his father.

"Brig Walter Scott, Leighton, Matamoras 30 ds., with cotton to Negreponte & Agelasto. Oct. 18 [1863], off Tortugas, was boarded by U.S. gunboat Clyde" (New York Times 6 Nov 1863, p 8.

Michel Agelasto is referenced as one of the 1822 massacre refugees who arrived in Marseille (Echinard); This Michel fled to Syros and didn't arrive in Marseille until at least after 1835.

1871 England census: 22 Pembridge Crescent household headed by J M Agelasto, 35, merchant, b. Syros, Greece; wife Aglaia, 29, b. Marseille; sons Michel, 5; Pendley, 4; daughters Katherine, 3; Mary, 2 mos., Alexandra, 11 months; all b. London; father Michael P., 68, retired merchant; mother Marie M., 57, both b. Chios [Scio, Turkey]; & 6 servants.

Philanthropy: in 1867 M(ichael) P. Agelasto donated 100 Francs to Chios Schools; Michael Agelasto & Son donated 250 Francs and M(ichael) P. Agelasto 100 Francs to the Chios Hospital according to unpublished research by Demetrios Melachrinoudis. In 1972 Michael P. Agelasto again gave 200 Francs to the hospital. According to Reports on Hygiene Institutions of Chios by the same author, he contributed to the hospital in various years from 1874-1880.

    M. Agelasto, Marseille, is listed among the diaspora Greeks donating 300 fr. to a fund for the Thebes earthquake in 1853.

Petrocochino-Agelasto, Marseille, is listed among the diaspora Greeks donating 250 fr. to a fund for the Thebes earthquake in 1853.

  8. 16.  Franga (Pandely) Agelasto Descendancy chart to this point (7.Pandely3, 3.Dimitri2, 1.Maria1) was born about 1800?; died in Feb 1867 in Athens, Attica, Greece; was buried in First Cemetery of Athens, Greece.

    Notes:

The parentage -- Michael (Pandia) Agelasto (1792-1853) and Arghyro (Dimitrios) Petrocochino (1801-1849), reported by Argenti, is wrong.

Her name is sometimes transliterated as "Franca." She is buried next to her father. A graveside monument reads: "Here lies Franca M. Catinakis, born Agelastos who, born in Chios in 1800 and having lived in virtue and piety, died in Athens in February 1867. This stone was erected in her memory by her children." Her 1800 birth date, or her father’s, is obviously in error if her father was born in 1797.(George Agelasto)

A Franga Agelasto is mentioned as an old woman living in Chios at the end of the 19th Century in George P. Georgiadis, The St. Ioannis Church of the Chiots in Galata, (Constantinople, 1898), as cited by George Zolotas, History of Chios (Athens, 1928), p 264.

The sisters Franga and Marietta Agelasto were declared as the sole heiresses of their uncle Stephanos D. Agelastos in a hereditary title certificate issued by the Mayor of Athens.

    George Agelastos comments:

Stephen D. died 22/23 February 1867. Franca Katinakis, whose grave is next to Stephen’s, died also (according to her tomb inscription) in February 1867. Did she die before or just 2-3 days after Stephen’s death? In either case it seems to me quite certain that the inheritance certificate was issued after Franca’s death, as it is improbable (not to say impossible, due to the necessary legal procedures) that this certificate could so soon be issued, just a couple of days after Stephen’s death. Such certificates were always based on the testimony of two witnesses, so my conclusion is that the family of Stephen’s brother Pandely concealed Franca’s death and just found two witnesses to make a false testimony to the authorities. At least the second heiress, Maria, seemed to be really alive by that time.

Family/Spouse: Michael (Dimitrius) Katinakis. Michael was born about 1792; died on 09 Mar 1866 in England UK. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  9. 17.  Marietta (Pandely) Agelasto Descendancy chart to this point (7.Pandely3, 3.Dimitri2, 1.Maria1) was born about 1820 in Constantinople/Istanbul Turkey.

    Notes:

    Unknown to Argenti.

This information is provided by George Vassiadis who reports: Marietta and Anastasios are also attested to by Sturdza.

Argenti has Argentou Agelasto married to Eustache Eugenidi and says that Franga Agelasto is her sister. It is certain that Argenti placed Franga in the wrong family and he probably misplaced Argentou as well. Possibly (1) Argenti's Argentou was in fact Marietta and (2) was indeed Franga's sister.

LDS (familysearch.com) listed on 11 Mar 2001 a Marietta Agelasto birth abt 1820, Constantinople, marriage abt 1841, Constantinople.

The sisters Franga and Marietta Agelasto were declared as the sole heiresses of their uncle Stephanos D. Agelastos in a hereditary title certificate issued by the Mayor of Athens.

    George Agelastos comments:

The initial of Maria’s husband’s name is not clearly legible on the certificate. It reads like “Θ” (Th) but is most probably an “A”, which means she is undoubtedly Anastasios Eugenidis’ wife, mentioned as “Marietta” on these pages.

Marietta married Anastasios Eugenidi about 1841 in Constantinople/Istanbul Turkey. Anastasios was born about 1797 in Sparta, Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece; died in 1860 in Constantinople/Istanbul Turkey. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 44. Demosthenes (Anastasios) Eugenidi  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1841 in [Constantinople/Istanbul Turkey]; died in 1898.
    2. 45. Eustathios (Anastasios) Eugenidi  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 01 Aug 1842 in Tatavla, Constantinople/Istanbul Turkey; died on 10 Jan 1914 in Hotel Ritz, Place Vendome, Paris 1er, Île-de-France, France.
