  1. 1.  Dimitri (Pandelis) Agelasto was born before 1787; died before 1829.

    Notes:

Zolotas says that references to Dimitri Pandelis Agelasto are found in three sources: the Lazaretto Codex of Chios in 1787, archives of Chadzi Lorenzis Schilizzi in 1816, and in Smyrni in 1816. Argenti created two Dimitri (#7, Dimitri Zannis ) and (#10, Dimitri Pandelis), but this was apparently a mistaken reading of Zolotas who referred to Dimitri only as the son of Pandelis, not Zannis. (George Agelasto)

Logically this man may have had a first son named Pandely Dimitri. Indeed, Pandoleon [Pandely] D. Agelasto was among the 327 Chiot refugees in Syros who signed a letter dated 10 Jul 1829 to the Governor of Greece.

Family/Spouse: Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 2. Pandely (Dimitri) Agelasto  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1780 in Chios, Greece; died after 1829.
    2. 3. Stephen Demetrios (Demetrios) Agelasto  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1790; died on 23 Feb 1867 in Athens, Attica, Greece; was buried in First Cemetery of Athens, Greece.

  1. 2.  Pandely (Dimitri) Agelasto Descendancy chart to this point (1.Dimitri1) was born about 1780 in Chios, Greece; died after 1829.

    Notes:

Pandoleon [Pandely] D. Agelasto was among the 327 Chiot refugees in Syros who signed a letter dated 10 Jul 1829 to the Governor of Greece.

    Residence: 1829, Syros.

Family/Spouse: Sappho (Stamatios) Agapiadis. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 4. Franga (Pandely) Agelasto  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1800?; died in Feb 1867 in Athens, Attica, Greece; was buried in First Cemetery of Athens, Greece.
    2. 5. Marietta (Pandely) Agelasto  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1820 in Constantinople/Istanbul Turkey.

  2. 3.  Stephen Demetrios (Demetrios) Agelasto Descendancy chart to this point (1.Dimitri1) was born about 1790; died on 23 Feb 1867 in Athens, Attica, Greece; was buried in First Cemetery of Athens, Greece.

    Notes:

Residence: Constantinople bef 1821; possibly Syros 1824-34; Athens aft 1836.

    Occupation: Merchant

According to his obituary, published in the Athens newspaper Alithia (The Truth), 14 February 1867, Stephen D. had made a fortune as a successful merchant in Constantinople in the period before the Greek Revolution of 1821. He settled in Athens in 1837 and gained the reputation of a great philanthropist, contributing to or participating in several welfare institutions. In the last years of his life he was treasurer of the Athens Orphanage.

A graveside monument reads : "For Stephanos D. Agelastos, from Chios, a pious and honest man, a great patriot, a lover of all beautiful things, who passed away on the 2nd of February of the year 1867 at the age of 70, this stone was erected by his relatives as a memorial of their gratitude." To have been a successful merchant before 1821, he would probably have been born no later than 1780. (photo by George Agelasto).

27 Nov 1834: Stephanos Agelasto, 55, married, born Chios [abt 1779], merchant, arriving Syros 1824, swore allegiance to the government at The Orthodox Church of Christ's Transfiguration (Metamorphosis), Syros, (before the town hall was built). Michel Pandely Agelasto, who had arrived on Syros the same year, took the oath the same day. It is likely that this is another Stephanos Agelasto, Michel P.'s third cousin, as this man never married according to probate.

Stephen Agelasto was among the 327 Chiot refugees in Syros who signed a letter dated 10 Jul 1829 to the Governor of Greece.

    Buried:
    Sec 5, n 708

    Died:
The Mayor of Athens issued a hereditary title certificate for Stephanos D. Agelastos. Another document, issued by the same office, claims that his sole heir is the adult son of Eugenios Agelastos.

    George Agelastos comments:

The first certificate must have been issued shortly after Stephen’s death in 1867, the second in 1904. Franca K. died in the same year as Stephen D.; Maria E., whose birth year appears to be 1820, had most probably also died before 1904. So it does make sense that since both heiresses were dead, someone else appeared in 1904, some 40 years after Stephen’s death, and claimed to be the sole heir to Stephen D.

That claim was, of course, sustained by the testimony of two witnesses. But why didn’t that person show up by the time of Stephen’s death? Why, during all those years, didn’t he undertake anything against Franca and Maria being recognized as sole heiresses to Stephen? My conclusion is that this Eugenios Agelastos found (or just paid) two persons to make a false testimony in his favor. In Greece (at least in earlier times, but perhaps it is nowadays still possible), you just need two false witnesses and then you can claim anything. That is my only possible explanation for this confusing story.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Franga (Pandely) Agelasto Descendancy chart to this point (2.Pandely2, 1.Dimitri1) was born about 1800?; died in Feb 1867 in Athens, Attica, Greece; was buried in First Cemetery of Athens, Greece.

    Notes:

The parentage -- Michael (Pandia) Agelasto (1792-1853) and Arghyro (Dimitrios) Petrocochino (1801-1849), reported by Argenti, is wrong.

Her name is sometimes transliterated as "Franca." She is buried next to her father. A graveside monument reads: "Here lies Franca M. Catinakis, born Agelastos who, born in Chios in 1800 and having lived in virtue and piety, died in Athens in February 1867. This stone was erected in her memory by her children." Her 1800 birth date, or her father’s, is obviously in error if her father was born in 1797.(George Agelasto)

A Franga Agelasto is mentioned as an old woman living in Chios at the end of the 19th Century in George P. Georgiadis, The St. Ioannis Church of the Chiots in Galata, (Constantinople, 1898), as cited by George Zolotas, History of Chios (Athens, 1928), p 264.

The sisters Franga and Marietta Agelasto were declared as the sole heiresses of their uncle Stephanos D. Agelastos in a hereditary title certificate issued by the Mayor of Athens.

    George Agelastos comments:

Stephen D. died 22/23 February 1867. Franca Katinakis, whose grave is next to Stephen’s, died also (according to her tomb inscription) in February 1867. Did she die before or just 2-3 days after Stephen’s death? In either case it seems to me quite certain that the inheritance certificate was issued after Franca’s death, as it is improbable (not to say impossible, due to the necessary legal procedures) that this certificate could so soon be issued, just a couple of days after Stephen’s death. Such certificates were always based on the testimony of two witnesses, so my conclusion is that the family of Stephen’s brother Pandely concealed Franca’s death and just found two witnesses to make a false testimony to the authorities. At least the second heiress, Maria, seemed to be really alive by that time.

Family/Spouse: Michael (Dimitrius) Katinakis. Michael was born about 1792; died on 09 Mar 1866 in England UK. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Marietta (Pandely) Agelasto Descendancy chart to this point (2.Pandely2, 1.Dimitri1) was born about 1820 in Constantinople/Istanbul Turkey.

    Notes:

    Unknown to Argenti.

This information is provided by George Vassiadis who reports: Marietta and Anastasios are also attested to by Sturdza.

Argenti has Argentou Agelasto married to Eustache Eugenidi and says that Franga Agelasto is her sister. It is certain that Argenti placed Franga in the wrong family and he probably misplaced Argentou as well. Possibly (1) Argenti's Argentou was in fact Marietta and (2) was indeed Franga's sister.

LDS (familysearch.com) listed on 11 Mar 2001 a Marietta Agelasto birth abt 1820, Constantinople, marriage abt 1841, Constantinople.

The sisters Franga and Marietta Agelasto were declared as the sole heiresses of their uncle Stephanos D. Agelastos in a hereditary title certificate issued by the Mayor of Athens.

    George Agelastos comments:

The initial of Maria’s husband’s name is not clearly legible on the certificate. It reads like “Θ” (Th) but is most probably an “A”, which means she is undoubtedly Anastasios Eugenidis’ wife, mentioned as “Marietta” on these pages.

Marietta married Anastasios Eugenidi about 1841 in Constantinople/Istanbul Turkey. Anastasios was born about 1797 in Sparta, Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece; died in 1860 in Constantinople/Istanbul Turkey. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
