Notes |
- Residence, Marseilles, France: 1871-72, boulevard de Longchamp 72 and Cours du Chapitre 11; 1873, 1876, 1884 avenue du Prado 193; 1885, allees des Capucines 20 [for son's birth]; 1898-1909, allees des Capucines 14. [2]
- Occupation: merchant; 1898, with Zafiropulo & Zarifi; founded Zarifi & sons (Societe Zarifi fils), Marseille. [3, 4]
- He signed the birth certificates of Paul (Emmanuel) Rodocanachi, his wife's second cousin, and of his grand-daughter Argine Mitaranga and his grandson Stephane Pericles Georges Zarifi.
- Chevalier, Legion of Honor
- He was in partnership with Nicholas Zarifi, Leonidas Georges Zarifi, Pandely Simiriotti, Stephen Zafiropulo, Michael Zarifi, John Michael Zarifi, and Theodore Michael Zarifi, merchants, 21 Great Winchester Street, London, under the firm of Zarifi Brothers and Co.; at Constantinople, under the firm of Zarifi Brothers, Sons, and Co.; and at Marseilles, under the firm of Zafiropulo and Zarifi until dissolved 30 Jun 1886 (London Gazette 30 July 1886).
- Pericles Zarifi, banker, 20 allees des Capucines, Marseille, was a general member, from 1867, Association for the Encouragement of Greek Studies, Paris, France. [5]
- The nephew of one of the leading merchants of the second generation of Greeks in Marseille, Étienne Zafiropoulo. He has been called the principal Greek capitalist in Marseille at the time and a pivotal figure in that city’s Greek community, (citing a 1961 French report). He was part of the Marseille commercial house Zarifi-Zafiropoulo -- originally a processor of Russian wheat into flour -- which he ran after the death of his uncle Étienne Zafiropoulo in 1894, supervising the transition from a business in a traditional commercial economy to that in an industrializing society. He made a fortune in real estate and lost much through fraudulant action by Alexandria banks around 1911. [6, 7]
- Pericles Zarifi participated in Marseille's Greek church deliberations in 1876 & 1877 (Calapodis). [8]
- He was a witness to the marriage of Catherine Negroponte and Hector Demetri A. Economo, Paris, 21 Jun 1893.
