Negroponte, 50, Greek, merchant, arrived New York from Liverpool on the Scythia 2 Jan 1880. The 1878 London directory lists John Paul Negroponte at 9 The Cedars, Clapham Common, Greater London. John T. Negroponte was a witness at the wedding of his sister-in-law Chariklea 'Harriet' (Eustratius) Ralli and Pandely (Hypatios) Fachiri 15 Sep 1879, Thornton Road, Clapham Park, London, England. The 1861 New Orleans directory lists Negroponte & Agelasto, com. mers. 119 Gravier, John P. Negroponte and A.M. Agelasto. John Negroponte sailed from New York to Liverpool aboard the Scotia (New York Daily Tribune 3 Jul 1863 p 2). [without more detail this could apply to several Johns on our tree] 'Negreponte & Agelasto (represented A.Ralli & Co. of London)', established 1861, is on Contopoulos' list of principal Greek commercial houses in New York City. The firm was a member of the New York Merchants Exchange, corner Exchange Place and William Street, NYC. Other members included Ralli & Co., Rodocanache & Co., M. Psiachi, Scaramangu Bros. and Fachiri & Co. (New York Times 14 May 1863 p 5). Agelasto in Negroponte & Agelasto; 1866, in Ralli partnership, India. During the time in NYC Pericles Paul Negroponte was a merchant on Beaver Street. Travel: 1863, NYC to Liverpool; Jan 1880, Liverpool to NYC. 1873: John Negreponte was a member of the Board of Managers of the New York Cotton Exchange and on its Finance Committee in 1874. [3] Around 1861 Ralli Bros opened a branch at Karachi under the control of John Negroponte. The branch was closed in 1866, then reopened in 1882. [4] John Negreponte was sent to Karachi in 1865 to open a branch of Ralli Brothers.
