  1. 1.  Nikiforos (Constantinos) Georgiadis was born about 1843 in Syros, Cyclades Islands, Greece.

    Notes:

According to his great granddaughter Angela Abell, he was "a self-made man who became a very successful merchant. He owned two large properties on Syros which you will no doubt see when you go. The town house was in Vaporia, it is now the de luxe Melathron Hotel; in 1905 Nikiforos built a villa in Dellagrazia, with two towers, one round and one square, just opposite the church of St John. This house was requisitioned in the war as an orphanage and continued to be used as such until the early 60s. It was then in a very dilapidated state and was sold by the family, I believe to a daughter of the ship-owner, Nomikos, who restored the house to its former glory. The family believed that Nikiforos' father, Constantinos, had fled from Chios to Syros in a boat with other lads all in their late teens. Indeed the mausoleum which has a bust of Nikiforos which had previously stood in the garden of the Dellagrazia villa, has 'from Chios' within the inscription. However, when my husband and I were in Syros researching the family history we found onstantinos' 'Application for Citizenship of Ermoupolis' which clearly stated that he came to Syros in 1832, from Cyprus, and that he was 60 when he signed the document (1835). So it remains a family mystery - it would have been a great advantage, both socially and commercially, to be thought to have come from Chios, even if he was not of the elite Chiotis!

He and several school mates gave an icon, Zoodochos Pighi, to Agios Athanassios (abt 1859) and this has been celebrated ever year since - on the first First Friday after Greek Easter. According to his great granddaughter, "Until he died my great uncle used to attend this, and when he died his daughter (who herself died earlier this year [2010]) gave money for this service and the obligatory refreshments after to be carried on in perpetuum. We attended a couple of years ago, the church was packed for the 3 hr service and Father Sirigos recited the history of the icon. It was a very special occasion for us and we got talking to a lot of lovely people."

Nikiforos K. Georgiadis, 32, b. Ermoupolis, married, merchant, swore allegiance to the Greek state on 20 May 1875 at the town hall, Ermoupolis, Syros.

1879 Syros census lists household of Nikiforos Georgiadis, 38, merchant; wife Aetolia, 21; daughter Maria, 3; Perdica, 8.

Nikiforos married Aetolia K. Voikli on 06 Apr 1874. Aetolia was born about 1858. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
