Some Greek intellectuals are thoroughly convinced that the military coup d'etat of April 21, 1967 was directly engineered by the Central Intelligence Agency, acting through Nato channels. Thessaloniki lawyer Demitrius Zannas, who was educated in an American school and who has acted as counsel for several major U.S. firms, see the shadow of the CIA behind the colonels. "Few people feel as bitter as I do against the Americans," he said. "They are responsible for our slavery".
