    Mildred Savaides Math Teacher

    Mildred James Reese Byrd Savaides, 98, who taught math in the Arlington County public school system for more than 20 years and was active in the National Education Association, died of respiratory arrest Aug. 25 at Amerisist Assisted Living Residences in Front Royal, Va.

    Mrs. Savaides taught in Arlington at Woodrow Wilson and Oak Ridge elementary schools, among others, from 1952 to 1975. She then became a substitute teacher in Arlington and for 10 years in Warren County, Va., public schools.

    During her career, she was active within the NEA and received many awards. In 1954, she was selected to attend the NEA World Teachers meeting in Oslo. In 1964, she was one of 12 teachers to receive an award for math and science. She also was one of six teachers in 1964 to serve as a delegate and later chairman of the NEA's Career Service Committee.

    She represented Arlington schools in a national math conference and was one of the first five teachers in the Washington area selected for a scholarship to study the "new math" principles in the 1960.

    Mrs. Savaides was born in McCaskill, Ark., and attended Arkansas State Teachers College. She received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Denver. She was an elementary school teacher in El Dorado, Ark., before working in Arlington.

    She worked as a part-time receptionist for her son-in-law's business, Best Exterminating Services, for 20 years and retired three years ago.

    She was a member of the Arlington and Warren retired teachers associations and the Pilot Club and was a life member of the Virginia PTA.

    She loved ballroom dancing and participated in dance competitions in the United States, Mexico and Spain, representing the Arthur Murray and the Fred Astaire dance studios.

    Her marriage to Clyde Byrd ended in divorce. Her husband, Harry Savaides, died in 1964.

    Survivors include two children from her second marriage, Harriet Harris of Front Royal and Michael Savaides of Burke; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

    Mildred married Harry (Michael) Savaides on 19 Feb 1956 in First Methodist Church, Fairfax, Virginia USA. Harry (son of Michael Aristodemos (Aristides) Savaides and Angela (Constantine) Negroponte) was born on 24 Feb 1913 in New York, New York USA; died on 15 Feb 1964 in 522 Hazelton St., Falls Church, Virginia USA; was buried on 17 Feb 1964 in Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, Maryland USA.
