Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Constantine Jacobus (Jacobus) Negroponte was born about 1836 in Syros, Cyclades Islands, Greece (son of Jacobos (Theodore) Negroponte and Orietta [Negroponte]); died about 1905 in Odessa/Athens.

    Notes:

    Occupation: Merchant of Chios.

Residence: 1871-1874, Cleveland Lodge, Oakhill Park, Liverpool, England.

1871 England census finds living at Cleveland Lodge, Oakhill Park, West Derby, Lancashire: Constantine Negroponte, head, 36, cotton broker, b. Greece; wife Marietta, 25, b. London; and 4 servants.

Liverpool Electoral Registers, 1875: Constantine James Negroponte, D 3 Exchange Buildings (counting house).

Argenti does not recognise his second marriage to Theano Couvela or their offspring.

Constantine James Negreponte was a cotton broker in the firm Wm. Phythian Lees and Co., Liverpool, in partnership with William Phythian Lees, Lysander Stephen Galatti (London Gazette 2 Jul 1869).

The partnership of C. and N. Negroponte, Liverpool, merchants, was dissolved in 1865 (Liverpool Mercury 30 Nov 1865). Argenti records no such 'N' Negroponte.

He advertized to rent a house (Liverpool Mercury 9 Jun 1868) and sell houses and property in Oakhill Park, Broad Green, Liverpool, England, in 1868 (Liverpool Mercury 30 Jun 1868).

He participated in the Liverpool and Manchester Agricultural Show, Sep 1871, and showed in competition his Scotch terriers which placed 'extra' (Liverpool Mercury 7 Sep 1871). He was on the local committee of the Royal Manchester, Liverpool and North Lancashire Agricultural Society (LLiverpool Mercury 5 Sep 1883).

    John J. Negroponte (£15), P.P. Negroponte (£5), C.J. Negroponte (£5), Sophocles Spartali (£5), A.S. Agelasto (£5), C.T. Rodocanachi (£15), were among contributors to the Cephalonia Relief Fund (Liverpool Mercury 26 Mar 1867).

C.J. Negreponte signed a letter of protest (against arbitrary Italian bureaucracy) that appeared in The Times, 9 Jul 1883, pg. 10. He was among 120 passengers on the P. and O. steamer Tanjore, at the quarantine station, eight miles off Venice, 4 Jul 1883, because cholera had broken out at Damietta, another Egyptian port city. They had departed Alexandria 26 Jun 1883 and were being quarantined, in successive five-day sentences, because disease had been found elsewhere in Egypt.

See his namesake. It is unclear who is who.

C.G. [sic, perhaps a typo] Negroponte was a supper and refreshment steward at the grand fancy dress ball given at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall by S. Georgala, of the frimof B. Georgala and Co., Greek general merchants (Liverpool Mercury, 30 Dec 1871).

21 Jun 1912: Const. Jacob Negroponte, 77, born Ermoupolis, married, clerk, swore allegiance to the Greek government.

On the day of the 1861 British census, there were two unmarried men named Constantine Negroponte in Liverpool: (1) aged 27, cotton merchant, born in Syros, Greece, lived at 150 Crown Street with Mary Anne Smith, a visitor, and a servant. (2) aged 32, merchant, lodged at 163 Upper Parliament Street [digital record difficult to decipher; scanner says middle initial 'P' and born USA]. Most probably, this man is the former or neither.

Perhaps he had a son, Michael, a physician.

    Died:
"According to my cousin in Greece, he died in the early 20th Century, either in Odessa or Athens. He was in or coming back from a trip to Odessa" (Christina Vlachos-Edwards)

Constantine married Theano (Hercules) Couvela. Theano (daughter of Hercules Couvela) died about 1925 in Alexandria, Egypt. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Theano (Hercules) Couvela (daughter of Hercules Couvela); died about 1925 in Alexandria, Egypt.

    Notes:

Mrs. Joanna Negroponti gave a priestly vestment to the Greek Church of Manchester, 1884.

    Died:
"She died in the 1920s in her daughter Clio's home in Alexandria, Egypt" (Christina Vlachos-Edwards).

    Notes:

    Marriage not noted by Argenti.

    Married:
28 Aug 1907: Jacob Const. Negroponte [perhaps their son], 27, born Ermoupolis, unmarried, merchant, swore allegiance to the Greek government at the town hall, Ermoupolis.

    Children:
