  1. 1.  Hippatios (John) Sagrandi was born on 10 Aug 1858 in Odessa, Ukraine (son of John (Eustratios) Sagrandi and Calliope Ivanova).

    Notes:

    The data in this line come from his marriage certificate. His descendants appear on the website Familles Parentes et Alliées, administered by Francoise Bernard Bries. This man is not listed in the 1860 Syros census with his parents. His The marriage certificate says he is eldest son, but that position -- according to the census -- belongs to Eustratios, b. 1846. This confirms to Greek naming tradition (after the paternal grandfather). Note that both putative parents were reported to have died before his marriage so they were not then alive to provide information to the registrar.

    He arrived in Algeria in 1868.

    Occupation: doctor, medical corps, French Foreign Legion.

    Residence: 1858, Ukraine; 1868-, Algeria.

    John E. Sagrandi, 28, Chios, unmarried, arriving Syros 1836, merchant, swore allegiance to the Greek state at the town hall, Ermoupolis, Syros, 8 May 1844.

    Not to be confused with his namesake, b. Chios ,abt 1818; d. Athens, 16 Apr 1886 [his Athens death certificate].

    Jean Sagrandy is listed the 1851 Marseille census, Allees de Meilhan 45.

    Name:
    In the German book his name is written as "Eustachios", which must be wrong, as there is no such name in Greek. Two possible but very different names are: Eustathios (nickname Stathis) and Eustratios (nickname Stratos). The latter is the name used by his son Pandia for his own first born son; given Greek naming tradition, this would be the baby's paternal grandfather. (George Agelastos)

    Her identity established in a book published in Germany, 1829.

    She lived in Marseille in 1829 with her brother Michel while her sons John and Pandia were cared for in Germany by a charity, The Society of The Friends of Greece in Altenburg.
