Name:
(Sikanon) He was created 'Ritter von Galati' by the Emperor of Austria 27 Oct 1873. (Christopher Long)
The Ritter von Galatti name: I feel quite certain that the Galati changed the spelling of their name to Galatti (with double t) after they had settled in Italy. The tt-spelling makes their name sound more Italian. I don't know where they first settled, but it seems that they have been living in areas belonging to the Habsburg Empire, which could explain their contacts with the German-speaking Austrians and the fact that we find them later in Vienna and other Austrian regions. In any case, "Galatti" is not the spelling Germans or Austrians prefer to use, but simply the spelling the Galatis themselves used for their name when they moved from Italy to Austria. "Ritter von..." means "Knight of..." ("Chevalier de...") and I presume that one of the Galatti family must have held a high office in the Austrian administration (or military) and was ennobled by the Emperor to a "Ritter" and that his siblings and descendants were obviously also allowed to use that title. (George Agelasto, 2014)
