    He received the bulk of his mother-in-law's estate, which ended up in court.

    John A. Negroponte is the likely Mr. Negroponte who was a member of the Manchester Cretan Committee ("The Cretan Question," Manchester Guardian, 15 Mar 1897, p 7).

    J A Negroponte departed Bombay on Oriental, 7 Feb 1890, for Brindisi [Italy].

    Her will, dated 14 Jan 1911, was subjected to judicial review. As co-executrix Esmeralda Negroponte petitioned the court to clarify provisions of the will relating to flowers for the Petrocokino funeral vault, memorial services and a legacy to the Greek church, Higher Broughton. The court deemed these first two provisions to be in perpetuity, not charitable gifts and thus invalid. The legacy was permitted.
