On 12 July 2008 some attendees of our reunion visited the cemetery. The grass in the Greek section had just been mowed so the state of the burial area was quite apparent. The perimeter of the section has receded in places by more than a meter so that foliage has overtaken numerous outlying graves. Some plots in the interior are also overgrown with plants and briars. Tombstones are leaning or sunken. Ivy obscures names and inscriptions on many graves. The Mortuary Chapel of St Stephen is closed to the public due to safety issues. What can be done to prevent further decay, establish a benchmark for maintenance and ensure a landscape that respects our ancestors?
