Located next to the Negroponte family's 'The Ferns' and close to the Rodocanachi family's 'Hawthorn House.'

1851 England census: Bury New Road, Salford, Broughton [Manchester] household headed by John Contostavlos, 21, merchant of silk & cotton goods; brother Leonard, 18, his apprentice; Theodore Coronio, 23, cousin, merchant of silk & cotton goods, all b. Greece; nephew Constantine Lambrenad, 24, merchant of silk & cotton goods, b. Turkey; & 2 servants.
Entry in the 1872 NYC directory: Contostavlos, John, cotton, 5 S. William, h 843 Fifth Ave; 1877 directory, 446 Lexington Ave.
John Kontostavlos, established 1871, is on Contopoulos' list of principal Greek commercial houses in New York City. Between 1870-1910 John Contostavlos was a member of the New York Cotton Exchange.
John Contostavlo contributed £1 to the Relief Fund for the Wounded Danes (Daily News & The Morning Post [London], 16 Mar 1864).
Not to be confused with Jean (Alexander) Condostavlo (18 Oct 1891 - 10 Aug 1926), son of Alexander (Jean) Condostavlo and Mina (Pandia) Ralli.

4. | Alexander (Pandely) Condostavlo / Contostavlos was born on 01 Jan 1789 in Chios, Greece (son of Pandely (Leonidas) Condostavlo / Contostavlos and Loula (Linardis) Sgouta); died on 16 Sep 1865 in Athens, Attica, Greece. Notes:

Owner of Condostavlo & Co. Merchants, London. Played an important role during the Greek War of Independence and later in Greek politics after the founding of the Greek state. (Christopher Long)
Member of the Philiki Hetairai of Trieste. In 1818 he was corresponding from London with Adamantios Koraïs. Raised funds in London for the Greek cause and provided ammunition, etc.
In 1826 he oversaw the controversial construction of Greek warships in the USA. The two frigates generated substantial cost overruns and the matter went to arbitration, which he largely lost. He published a widely-distributed account of the events: A narrative of the material facts in relation to the building of the two Greek frigates, which generated a lot of press coverage in both the USA and Europe. In 1828 Capodistrias appointed him to acquire a mint for coin production (Malta). In 1856 he was Greek Finance minister and in 1857 President of the Greek parliament.
Alex. Contostavlo was in partnership with Stephen Franghiadi, as Contostavlo & Co., merchants, until 31 Aug 1824 and then continued the business alone (London Gazette 28 May 1825).
Alexander married Angeliki (Zannis) Rodocanachi. Angeliki (daughter of Zannis (Matthew) Rodocanachi and Despina (Ioannis) Tsitsekli) was born on 11 Jul 1803 in Chios, Greece; died on 18 Jun 1870 in Athens, Attica, Greece. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
