The Red Deer River Ranches website: In 1947, King Michael of Romania abdicated his throne and was given the opportunity to leave the country with an entourage, the King invited John and Joan Negropontes to join him. From Romania they travelled to Switzerland, then to England, and onto Washington, D.C.. Looking for an area similar to his home, John travelled to Alberta in 1948, at this time he purchased a parcel of farmland where he was joined by his wife and children in 1950. In 1951, his daughter Elizabeth was born in Olds, Alberta. In 1955 the Negropontes family met the Count and Countess Batthany of Switzerland. The two families later took a trip to the Ya Ha Tinda Ranch and Big Horn Falls, the were captivated by the scenery as many still are today and this led to their purchase of the then Snyder Ranch. Along with the exchange of owners, the name was changed to... Red Deer River Cattle Ranch, which then became REDDEER RIVER RANCHES Ltd. The farm that the Negropontes family had near Olds, along with land leased on the Coal Camp flats were the source of feed for cattle wintered at the ranch. The land on the flats was eventually purchased by the Batthany family. In 1956 the Little TeePee was renovated and an addition was put on to house the Negropontes family. In the mid 1970's the Negropontes family took over the complete ownership of the ranch. In a few short decades the ranch once again went through many changes. Long time ranch manager Jack Crouch retired in the 1980's and had to be replaced by Jim Lowry, then in 1983 John Negropontes passed away. In 1985 the ranch was sold to Frank Garnett and Stan Bengtson.
