    Origin: Boudja, Turkey.

    The Defterego family owned the Manol Hotel of Boudja. According to Alex Baltazzi, the Manoli hotel was the centre of gaiety for the Levantine community pre 1922. They started a new life in Alexandria, Egypt, and owned a villa in the Alexandrian suburb of Bulkely. See Alex's discussion.

    Defterego, E.R. 652e, is listed among [British] Regular Army Reserve of Officers Oct-Dec 1943, p. 1524.

    According to Malta passport control, Emmanuel Roberts DEFTEREGO, traveller, residence Cospicua, departed for Egypt, 12 Oct 1923.

    Military Service WWII: Emmanuel Roberts DEFTEREGO (266890) commissioned as 2nd Lt, Egypt Section, Regular Army, 3 Feb 1943 (London Gazette, 30 Jul 1943, p. 3428; War Subs. Lt. E. R. Defterego (266890) relinquishes his commn. on account of ill-health, 17 Jul 1944, and is granted the hon. rank of Lt. (issue 15 Sep 1944, p. 4255).

    Emmanuel married Maria (Alexander) Baltazzi before 1924. Maria (daughter of Alexander (Demosthenes) Baltazzi and Panayota E. Dimitriadis) was born in 1898; died in 1976. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
